R+C principal, Walterio López, has been elected to the board of directors of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC).

Walterio has led significant R+C projects involving complex systems and design requirements. These include the EmeryStation East biotechnology laboratory in Emeryville and the Stanford Energy Systems Improvements to replace the current natural gas powered cogeneration plant with an electrically powered regeneration plant. He is a past chair of SEAONC’s Steel Seismology Subcommittee, serves on two advisory boards for research projects dealing with innovative structural steel systems, and is a corresponding member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Task Committee 9. In 2008, Walterio was awarded AISC’s T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award for his research in buckling-restrained braced frame technology.

R+C’s Marko Schotanus was awarded SEAONC’s Edwin G. Zacher Award, which is presented annually in recognition of outstanding recent service and contribution to the association. Marko’s work with SEAONC includes chairing the Existing Building Committee, serving as a Volunteer Outreach Coordinator, participating in the Christchurch New Zealand 2011 earthquake reconnaissance team, and assisting and contributing to SEAONC publications and conventions. Marko also serves as a director of the Northern California chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.

fly ashWith the growth in fly ash use in sustainable building construction, unease over mercury content in the material has also risen. Concerns after a fly ash spill in 2008 led to EPA consideration of categorizing  fly ash as a hazardous material. R&C engineers, Alan Kren and Beth Grote, have been working in sustainable structural engineering in recent years; they address the rising concern over fly ash in this Structural Engineer magazine article.
